When Wernog enters or leaves the battlefield, each opponent may investigate. Anyone who declines loses 1 life. Then you investigate once plus once for each opponent who took a Clue. So the opponents either feed you cards or take damage, and you get at least one Clue either way. Because it triggers on both entering and leaving, every flicker gives two triggers. The deck is built to blink, sacrifice or recast Wernog repeatedly and turn the Clue pile into cards and mana.
In the recorded games, the strongest version used Conjurer's Closet to blink Wernog every end step and Academy Manufactor to turn each Clue into a Clue, Food and Treasure. Paired with Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist for blue, it could close with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries after drawing through the deck. Sophina, Spearsage Deserter was another pairing that made even more Clues on attacks. Opponents who refused the Clue paid in life, so the commander chipped the table even in quiet games. Most games went long, and Wernog relied on its removal and card flow to stay in them.
