Whenever you cast a creature spell that doesn't share a creature type with a creature you control or a creature card in your graveyard, Volo copies that spell. The copy enters as a token. The deck uses as many different creature types as possible, so most creatures arrive twice. Strong enter-the-battlefield effects are the best targets. Changelings and shapeshifters share every type, so they block Volo's copies once they're out, and the order you cast creatures in matters.
In the recorded games, Volo got two of Consecrated Sphinx or two triggers from Eternal Witness, Hollowhenge Overlord or Gilded Drake. Myr Battlesphere and Return of the Wildspeaker turned a wide board into cards or damage. Phyrexian Metamorph copied key artifacts for extra mana, and Whispersilk Cloak protected Volo. A few lists used Food Chain or Temur Sabertooth to recast creatures. Most games were won by board presence and combat. The deck needed Volo alive and a steady supply of new types. Board wipes forced a slow rebuild, and tracking which types were already taken led to misplays.
