Whenever you cast your first spell each turn, Vial Smasher picks an opponent at random and deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to them or one of their planeswalkers. The trigger works on every player's turn, so instants cast on opponents' turns add up. A six-drop deals six. Since it has partner, Vial Smasher usually sits next to a second commander that adds colors and card draw, and the deck leans toward higher mana values to make each trigger hurt.
In the recorded games, Vial Smasher was paired with Tymna, Thrasios, Kraum, Malcolm and Sakashima, among others. With Sakashima, the legend rule goes away and a second Vial Smasher doubles every trigger. Malcolm's Treasure and Vial Smasher's pings kept life totals dropping, and Fury Storm let a single big spell count twice. Cascade from Yidris builds also stacked damage fast. The random targeting made it hard to finish one specific player, and blockers plus spot removal often blunted the pressure. Sweepers like Austere Command reset the small creatures. The deck also struggled with huge indestructible threats such as Blightsteel Colossus.
