Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher

$0.18

Vhal is a 2/3 with vigilance that taps for colorless mana equal to her toughness. That mana can't pay for spells from your hand, so the deck needs other places to cast from, plus activated abilities to sink it into. The Background slot does most of the work. Raised by Giants makes her a 10/10, which means ten mana every turn, and vigilance lets her attack and still tap afterward. Tavern Brawler exiles your top card each upkeep and lets you play it, which gives Vhal's mana a target.

In the recorded games, Raised by Giants was the most common partner, and Future Sight turned Vhal's mana into a stream of spells cast from the top of the library. Tavern Brawler builds leaned on red spells, and flipping a Blasphemous Act gave Vhal +9/+0 for the turn. One game ended when Rogue's Passage made a giant Vhal unblockable for commander damage. Only thirteen games were recorded, and the deck looked best once it untapped with Vhal on the battlefield. Without a way to cast spells outside the hand, a lot of that mana went unused.
