Szarekh is a 3/4 flying artifact creature, so he can usually attack safely. Whenever he attacks, you mill three cards and may put an artifact creature card or Vehicle card from among them into your hand. The deck is built around artifact creatures so most hits find a card, and the milled cards stock the graveyard for recursion and reanimation. It plays a patient game, sweeping or blocking early and attacking in the air once the board is stable.
In the recorded games, the attack trigger was the engine everything ran through: it found threats on schedule and refilled the hand after removal. Illuminor Szeras turned sacrificed creatures into big piles of black mana for X spells that made Necron tokens, and Mask of Memory on Szarekh drew even more. Mystic Forge let some lists play artifacts off the top. The deck won through board presence and recursion more than speed, often stabilizing against token swarms with removal. It needed Szarekh to survive long enough to attack, and early removal on him slowed it down.
