Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker
$0.23
$0.23
Mono-black aristocrats that sacrifices tiny creatures every turn and brings them back at end step to drain the table.
Whenever a creature with power 1 or less goes to your graveyard from the battlefield, you may return it at the beginning of the next end step, as long as Shirei is still around. That works on every turn, not only yours. The deck is packed with 1-power creatures that do something when they enter or die, plus free sacrifice outlets, so each body can be used again and again. Drain effects like Blood Artist turn the loop into damage.
In the recorded games, Shirei ground out value. Fume Spitter, Bone Shredder and Myr Sire came back turn after turn, Mindless Automaton added card draw, and Carrion Feeder and Blade of the Bloodchief turned the deaths into counters. Necropotence was the big card advantage piece. One list ran Shadowborn Apostle in multiples. Gray Merchant of Asphodel drained the table hard enough to knock out a player, and Blood Artist did the rest over time. The engine was slow but very hard to clear with sweepers alone. Removing Shirei with something like Beast Within shut it off, and exile or flicker effects broke the loop.
How it feels to play against
Mildly Annoying
Some frustrating moments but still fun.
