Whenever another nontoken creature enters under your control, Samwise creates a Food. You can sacrifice three Foods to return a historic card from your graveyard to your hand, meaning an artifact, a legendary card or a Saga. The deck plays many creatures, a lot of legends and artifacts, and Food payoffs. Each extra Food is either 3 life, sacrifice fodder or progress toward the next rebuy, so the deck can recover cards that would normally be gone for good.
In the recorded games, Samwise ground out value more than it raced. Rosie Cotton of South Lane put +1/+1 counters on creatures for every Food, and Academy Manufactor turned each Food into a Food, a Clue and a Treasure. Eternal Witness and Chord of Calling showed up in lists that tried to build a loop with these pieces for large mana and life totals. The repeated recursion made key threats hard to remove permanently. The main weaknesses were tempo and size. Faster aggressive decks pressured it, bounce on Samwise slowed Food production, and Dusk // Dawn wiped out the creatures once they had grown large.
