Ruric Thar is a 6/6 with vigilance and reach that attacks each combat if able. Whenever any player casts a noncreature spell, he deals 6 damage to that player, and that includes you. So the deck is almost all creatures and lands, with most removal and disruption coming from creature bodies. Every opponent is taxed 6 life for each removal spell, tutor or ritual, which slows spell-heavy decks badly.
In the recorded games, opponents held back noncreature spells while Ruric was out, and that tension shaped most games. Stax lists added Thorn of Amethyst, Trinisphere and Torpor Orb, and some had a Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Zealous Conscripts combo. Lightning Greaves gave Ruric haste, and Dragonborn Champion drew cards. Defense of the Heart and Primal Surge put several creatures in at once. Ruric was a prime target for removal like Seal of Doom, and fast combo decks often outpaced the deck.
