Melek, Reforged Researcher

$0.54

Melek's power and toughness are each twice the number of instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard, so ten spells in the yard make a 20/20. The first instant or sorcery you cast each turn also costs {3} less, which turns expensive draw spells and big sorceries into cheap plays. The deck runs a dense suite of instants and sorceries, loots to bin extra spells, and uses Melek either as a cost reducer or as the main beater once the graveyard is stocked.

In the recorded games, draw-and-discard spells like Frantic Search and Occult Epiphany did double duty, refilling the hand while growing Melek. Decaying Time Loop, with retrace, worked as a repeatable way to swap a bad hand for a fresh one. The biggest finish was Chandra's Ignition on a large Melek, which hit every opponent at once, and some lists looked for fling-style kills. Copy effects and counterspells filled out the rest. The weakness was obvious to the table: once Melek attacked, opponents started aiming removal and blockers at it, and a smaller graveyard meant a much less scary body.
