When Mairsil enters, you may exile an artifact or creature card from your hand or graveyard with a cage counter on it. Mairsil then has every activated ability of every caged card you own, and each ability can be used once per turn. Blinking or recasting Mairsil adds more cage counters, so the deck runs cheap flicker effects to build up its toolbox. Caged cards stay caged even if Mairsil leaves, so recasting him brings everything back at once.
In the recorded games, the most common combo lines used Sage of Hours for extra turns or Hateflayer with Tree of Perdition to kill players one at a time. Other lists went faster, using Reanimate on Griselbrand to draw 21 cards, or Underworld Breach and Time Vault with Voltaic Key. Spark Double copied Mairsil for twice the abilities, and Staff of Domination added draw. The deck relied on cheap blinks to protect Mairsil and keep stacking cages. Rest in Peace shut down its graveyard plan. Faster combo decks and big ramp decks sometimes won before it could set up.
