Whenever you cast your first instant spell each turn, if Kalamax is tapped, you copy it. Every time you copy an instant, Kalamax gets a +1/+1 counter. Attacking is the simplest way to tap it, so the deck casts instants on opponents' turns after combat, doubling removal, counterspells and card draw. It also plays extra copy effects, since any instant copy grows Kalamax, not just its own trigger.
In the recorded games, Kalamax played like a control deck that grew a large threat while holding up spells. Wilderness Reclamation and Seedborn Muse helped it cast a lot on other turns, and Growth Spiral and Thrill of Possibility were common copies. Competitive lists went for combos instead: Underworld Breach with Brain Freeze, Twinning Staff with Narset's Reversal, Isochron Scepter, or Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. Cyclonic Rift and Blasphemous Act reset boards. The deck struggled with Trinisphere, counterspells on Kalamax itself, and land-light hands, and opposing interaction regularly stopped its storm turns.
