Haldan, Avid Arcanist

$0.52

Haldan only works next to Pako, Arcane Retriever, and he tutors Pako when he enters. Whenever Pako attacks, it exiles the top card of each player's library with a fetch counter and gets a +1/+1 counter for each noncreature card hit. Haldan lets you play lands and cast noncreature spells from those exiled cards, spending mana as though it were any color. So every Pako attack hands you a few random spells from the whole table. The rest of the deck protects Pako and fills out with its own instants and sorceries.

In the recorded games, the pair played as a spell-heavy tempo deck that mixed its own interaction with whatever Pako stole. Casting opponents' removal and card draw gave it answers it never had to put in the deck. Extra turns and spell recursion showed up in a few lists to get more Pako attacks. Results swung a lot with what got exiled, since a pile of creature cards gave Haldan nothing to cast. If Pako died or couldn't attack safely, Haldan did very little on his own.
