Each time you cast an instant or sorcery, Gandalf picks a mode not yet chosen: tap or untap a permanent, deal 3 damage to each opponent, copy one of your instants or sorceries, or put Gandalf on top of your library. The copy mode is the strongest. Once all four are used, the modes reset only when Gandalf comes back as a new object, and as a commander the last mode can send him to the command zone instead. The deck runs cheap card draw, burn and big spells worth copying.
In the recorded games, Epic Experiment was the main payoff, and copying an extra turn spell produced back-to-back turns. Twincast and other copy effects doubled big spells. Brainstorm and Merchant Scroll kept the hand full, while Guttersnipe and Firebrand Archer added damage on every spell. Some pilots used the untap mode on mana rocks or lands to keep casting. Wins came from burn piling up or from one big turn chaining spells. The deck needed careful mana use, and it stumbled when it ran low on cards or couldn't find a big spell to copy.
