When you cast an instant or sorcery from your hand during an opponent's turn, Gandalf exiles it with three time counters as it resolves instead of letting it go to the graveyard. The card gains suspend, so it counts down on your upkeeps and you cast it again for free when the last counter comes off. Every removal spell, counterspell or draw spell you cast at instant speed happens twice. The deck holds up mana and plays almost entirely on other players' turns.
In the recorded games, Gandalf played as a flash control deck. Answers and card draw were cast at the end of opponents' turns, and suspended copies came back a few turns later. Wavebreak Hippocamp drew a card for each first spell cast on an opponent's turn, which kept the hand full. Timing mattered. Pilots had to plan ahead because suspended spells return on a fixed schedule whether they are useful or not. Three-color mana caused problems in some games, and the deck took a while to build pressure.
