Codie, Vociferous Codex

$0.35

Codie stops you from casting permanent spells, so the deck is almost entirely instants, sorceries and lands. For {4} and a tap, Codie adds {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}, netting one mana. The next spell you cast that turn triggers a cascade-like effect: you exile cards from the top until you hit an instant or sorcery with lower mana value and cast it free. The activation is a mana ability, so nobody can respond to it. Lands like Maze's End and Leyline of Mutation starting on the battlefield get around the restriction.

In the recorded games, most lists were turbo Ad Nauseam piles. They ramped with rituals, used Codie to chain spells, drew most of the deck with Ad Nauseam, and finished with a combo line such as Brain Freeze on themselves followed by Reanimate on Thassa's Oracle. Profane Tutor and Demonic Consultation found the missing piece, while Fierce Guardianship, Flusterstorm and Deflecting Swat fought over the stack. Slower builds won with Approach of the Second Sun or Maze's End. The weak spots were real: Ad Nauseam could cost too much life, the deck leaned hard on Codie, and well-timed counterspells or a faster opposing combo often beat it.
