Ayula, Queen Among Bears
$4.33
$4.33
Mono-green bear tribal that grows each new bear with counters or makes it fight, then attacks wide with anthems behind it.
Ayula is a 2-mana 2/2 bear. Whenever another Bear you control enters, you choose: put two +1/+1 counters on target Bear, or have a Bear you control fight a creature you don't control. Every bear is either a bigger threat or a removal spell. Bears are small and cheap, so the deck plays lots of 2-drops, changelings that count as bears and token makers. Some lists run snow-covered Forests for snow-matters bears.
In the recorded games, Ayula came down on turn two and the board grew from there. Hardened Scales and Metallic Mimic made the counters stack faster, while Gaea's Anthem, Unnatural Growth and Triumph of the Hordes turned a wide board into lethal attacks. The fight mode picked off mana creatures and utility pieces before they mattered. Its weakness showed when there were too few bears in hand: the bear count is thin, so some games stalled on weak draws or light green mana. Sweepers and bigger blockers could also blunt a board made of 2-power creatures.
