Altaïr is a three-mana 3/3 with first strike. Whenever he attacks, you may exile an Assassin creature card from your graveyard with a memory counter on it. Then, for every creature card you own in exile with a memory counter, you get a tapped and attacking token copy, which is exiled at end of combat. The exiled pile only grows, so each attack brings more Assassins than the last. Their attack and enters triggers fire again every time.
In the recorded games, the Altaïr decks spent the early turns filling the graveyard with mill and discard so Altaïr had Assassins to exile once he started attacking. Each combat added another token copy, and token doubling effects made those waves much larger. Some builds leaned on equipment, life gain and defensive creatures to survive until the Assassin pile was big enough. The deck got stronger the longer Altaïr kept attacking. Graveyard hate before the cards are exiled, or removal on Altaïr himself, slows that engine down considerably.
